Fourth-Year Medical Students

UCLA medical students can apply to do a Global Health Clinical Elective during their fourth year of medical school through the UCLA Center for World Health.  This experience offers opportunities for fourth-year students to work with surgeons at some of our partner clinical sites.

General Surgery Residents

The UCLA General Surgery Residency Program is pleased to offer funded positions for a limited number of residents to pursue global surgery research and/or clinical electives in Mozambique, Tanzania, and other partner sites. Please see the Global Surgery Rotation Application for details.

Orthopaedic Surgery Residents

The UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery sends between 3-6 residents per year to Soddo Christian Hospital in Soddo, Ethiopia. Residents and faculty travel to Ethiopia for 3-week blocks to perform surgeries, teach local medical students and residents, and participate in an exchange of ideas regarding providing surgical care in resource sparse environments. This partnership helps to provide care for the underserved in Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea and Somalia. For information, please contact Nicholas Bernthal at nbernthal@mednet.ucla.edu.

Ophthalmology Residents

The UCLA Department of Ophthalmology and Jules Stein Eye Institute has established a surgical elective for approximately 4 senior ophthalmology residents at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India. For information, please contact Anthony Aldave at aldave@jsei.ucla.edu.
