The UCLA Center for World Health welcomes Craig Russell, chief design and project delivery executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, to its External Advisory Board.
A more than three-decade veteran of Imagineering, Craig previously served as the leader responsible for all design, engineering, production, installation and project management functions for Parks and Resorts projects around the world for nearly 10 years. Craig most recently oversaw the construction and completion of the Shanghai Disney Resort, The Walt Disney Company’s first resort in mainland China.
He also served as vice president of Environmental Design, leading the group charged with transforming creative ideas and concepts into three-dimensional immersive experiences. In this role, Craig was responsible for design disciplines that include architecture, theatrical set design, lighting, graphics and landscape architecture, as well as all facets of engineering for facilities, rides, shows, attractions and theme parks.
Craig first joined Walt Disney Imagineering in 1980 as a project coordinator for Tokyo Disneyland, Disney’s first international theme park, where he relocated to manage the show and ride installation for six major attractions and three themed lands.
During his tenure with WDI, he has led the design of some of Imagineering’s biggest, most complex and highly successful projects, from concept through opening.
During a three-year absence from Disney, Craig worked as a project manager for attractions developed for Universal Studios, Six Flags and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Committee, as well as several projects in Asia before returning to Imagineering in 1986.
Craig is an active leader in Disney’s employee volunteer program, and serves on the board for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He also is active in the project and construction management industry, and recently sat on the board of the LEAN Construction Institute. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering systems from University of California, Los Angeles.

UCLA Center for World Health Founding Director Thomas Coates has been named director of the University of California Global Health Institute.
Coates succeeds the institute’s founding director, Dr. Haile Debas of UC San Francisco, who will become director emeritus after playing a pivotal role in launching the systemwide institute in 2009 and guiding its growth.
Coates, who previously served as the institute’s co-director, will be responsible for providing executive strategic, operational and resource management leadership for the institute.
In addition, Dr. Craig Cohen, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UCSF, and Dr. Patricia Conrad, professor and associate dean for global programs at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, will serve as the institute’s co-directors. Cohen previously served as co-director of the institute’s Center of Expertise on Women’s Health and Empowerment and Conrad served as co-director of the Center of Expertise on One Health. In their new role, they will work closely with the director to manage the institute’s operations.
The institute, which works to train the next generation of global health leaders and accelerate the discovery and implementation of transformative global health solutions, also named six new board members:
- Dr. Timothy Brewer, professor of medicine and vice provost of interdisciplinary and cross-campus affairs, UCLA;
- Nancy Burke, associate professor of public health, UC Merced;
- Matthew Guthaus, associate professor of computer engineering, UC Santa Cruz;
- Juliet McMullin, associate professor of anthropology, UC Riverside;
- Brad Pollock, professor and chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences, UC Davis; and
- Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences and Harold Simon Professor and chief of the Division of Global Public Health, UC San Diego.
The board, which is responsible for providing guidance to the institute in overall policy and direction in meeting organizational goals, is chaired by Mary Croughan, executive director of the Research Grants Program Office at the UC Office of the President.
It is our great pleasure to present to you the UCLA Center for World Health (CWH) 2015-2016 annual report. CWH is actively engaged in 70 countries around the world. Faculty members of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA partner with international colleagues on over 200 educational, research, and service programs. Key CWH regional strategies include initiatives in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia; some of our successes in each region over the last year are described in detail in the report, which covers our 2015-2016 fiscal year.
This last year was a pivotal one for CWH, as we concentrated our efforts on building bridges and investing in people and partnerships that support our vision of healing humankind through shared knowledge and compassion.
Working in some of the world’s most resource-challenged settings such as Malawi and Mozambique, we focus on capacity building to improve medical education, clinical care, and scientific expertise and work to address the most pressing health challenges.
Societal demand for improved health outcomes in many countries has opened additional windows of opportunity for CWH to further collaborate with our partners in middle- and high-income countries. Such partnerships can accelerate learning and innovation, both in the U.S. and in partner countries.
Aside from these focal areas, our annual report features a Letter from the Director, a section on the expansion of our Global Surgery Initiative, and illustrates the work of some of the students and faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Our international residency programs and the first annual Los Angeles Global Health Conference, hosted by CWH around the theme of “Transdisciplinary Perspectives in Global Health” are also highlighted in this report.

The UCLA Center for World Health welcomes Minda Wilson, serial entrepreneur, business consultant, attorney, and affordable healthcare advocate, to its External Advisory Board.
After the sale of her healthcare-related business in 2012, she founded Affordable Healthcare Review, http://www.affordablehealthcarereview.com, an educational organization with the goal of providing accurate, unbiased, reliable information about the changing healthcare landscape and explaining how it will impact you, your business and your family.
Ms. Wilson is a frequent speaker on this topic, having addressed the World Congress in its forum on healthcare and having spoken at many conferences including the annual Innovations in Healthcare Conference in Washington DC, sponsored by Premier Health.
In addition to her advocacy work, Ms. Wilson continues to advise clients on legal matters and works with businesses to improve their business performance. She sits on several corporate advisory boards and is active as a board member for several national non-profit organizations.
For more than 20 years, she has worked with companies in the areas of productivity improvement, crisis management, corporate organization and structure, computerized systems development and implementation, credit and accounting control, asset disposition activities, and, of course, healthcare.
Ms. Wilson holds a Juris Doctor from U.C.L.A., an M.B.A. from N.Y.U., and a B.S. in Systems Engineering from U.C.L.A. and resides in Los Angeles, CA.
The UCLA Center for World Health welcomes Rafael Suarez, corporate strategist and investment advisor, to its External Advisory Board.
Mr. Suarez has over 25 years experience as a corporate strategy advisor with a specialization in highly competitive industries. He served 15 years with Monitor Group (acquired by Deloitte in 2013) in the capacity of subject matter expert on nearly 100 client engagements for Fortune 50 and Fortune 500 clients.
In addition to competitive strategy, Mr. Suarez’s tenure at Monitor included work in national security, executive development and leadership development. His clients included Coca-Cola, Clorox, Amgen, Northrop Grumman, Baxter Health, Raytheon, the US Air Force, and US intelligence agencies among others.
Mr. Suarez is an experienced facilitator for senior workshops, in-residence change management efforts and often takes a hands-on role in executing client strategy in collaboration with C-suite leadership.
Prior to consulting, Mr. Suarez was in asset management for over a decade, with a focus on emerging markets, company valuation and portfolio management, largely in the Middle East and Latin America.
He is author /co-author of 10 custom business cases for Harvard Business School and Monitor Executive Development on strategy, leadership and execution and scenario planning.
He was most recently Executive Director of the Drucker School of Management in Claremont, CA, overseeing both the Corporate Strategy and Executive Education practices.
Mr. Suarez holds an MBA from Harvard and bachelors with honors from Brown University in International Relations. He is fluent in business Spanish.
